Facile synthesis of an acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid copolymer / polyvinylpyrrolidone semi-IPN hydrogel with excellent swelling and anti-leakage properties

Water scarcity becomes an increasingly serious problem for humankind due to climate change and population growth, especially the water leakage in arid and semi-arid areas. Hydrogel polymers show increasingly important roles on water resources utilization. A novel hydrogel copolymer, acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid copolymer / polyvinylpyrrolidone (P(AA-co-AMPS)/PVP) semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogel, was designed and successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot free radical copolymerization method. The main parameters during the synthesis process were optimized, including relative contents of polymer monomers, cross-linking agent, initiator and neutralization agent. Physical characterizations demonstrate that, P(AA-co-AMPS)/PVP hydrogel shows porous three-dimensional network structure, including a crosslinked network structure in P(AA-co-AMPS) copolymers and their intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions with linear PVP. The as-synthesized P(AA-co-AMPS)/PVP hydrogel not only can deliver superior water absorbing capability (up to 1689.95 g g−1) and good reswelling performance, but also shows excellent water anti-leakage performance when being composed with red clay, demonstrating its multi-role applications in future sustainable agriculture.

Scleroglucan-Based Foam Incorporating Recycled Rigid Polyurethane Waste for Novel Insulation Material Production

This study details the synthesis and performance evaluation of a novel lightweight thermal and acoustic insulation material, resulting from the combination of a scleroglucan-based hydrogel and recycled rigid polyurethane waste powder. Through a sublimation-driven water-removal process, a porous three-dimensional network structure is formed, showcasing notable thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Experimental data are presented to highlight the material’s performance, including comparisons with commercially available mineral wool and polymeric foams. This material versatility is demonstrated through tunable mechanical, thermal and acoustic characteristics, achieved by strategically adjusting the concentration of the biopolymer and additives. This adaptability positions the material as a promising candidate for different insulation applications. Addressing environmental concerns related to rigid polyurethane waste disposal, the study contributes to the circular economy.

Hydrogel/MOF Dual-Modified Photoelectrochemical Biosensor for Antibiofouling and Biocompatible Dopamine Detection.

For accurate in vivo detection, nonspecific adsorption of biomacromolecules such as proteins and cells is a severe issue. The adsorption leads to electrode passivation, significantly compromising both the sensitivity and precision of sensing. Meanwhile, common antibiofouling modifications, such as polymer coatings, still grapple with issues related to biocompatibility, electrode passivation, and miniaturization. Herein, we propose a composite antibiofouling coating strategy based on zwitterionic metal-organic frameworks (Z-MOFs) and a combination of acrylamide hydrogels. On a well-designed TiO2/Z-MOF/hydrogel photoelectrode, we achieve highly sensitive and selective detection of dopamine in complex biological environments. The hydrogel's three-dimensional porous structure combined with unique microporous architecture of Z-MOF ensures effective sieving of interfering macromolecules while preserving efficient small molecules and electron transport. This innovative approach paves the way for constructing miniature, in vivo antibiofouling sensors for molecule monitoring in living organisms with complicated chemical environments.

Numerical investigation of fluid flow behavior in steel cord with lattice Boltzmann methodology: The impacts of microstructure and loading force.

Steel cord materials were found to have internal porous microstructures and complex fluid flow properties. However, current studies have rarely reported the transport behavior of steel cord materials from a microscopic viewpoint. The computed tomography (CT) scanning technology and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) were used in this study to reconstruct and compare the real three-dimensional (3D) pore structures and fluid flow in the original and tensile (by loading 800 N force) steel cord samples. The pore-scale LBM results showed that fluid velocities increased as displacement differential pressure increased in both the original and tensile steel cord samples, but with two different critical values of 3.3273 Pa and 2.6122 Pa, respectively. The original steel cord sample had higher maximal and average seepage velocities at the 1/2 sections of 3D construction images than the tensile steel cord sample. These phenomena should be attributed to the fact that when the original steel cord sample was stretched, its porosity decreased, pore radius increased, flow channel connectivity improved, and thus flow velocity increased. Moreover, when the internal porosity of tensile steel cord sample was increased by 1 time, lead the maximum velocity to increase by 1.52 times, and the average velocity was increased by 1.66 times. Furthermore, when the density range was determined to be 0-38, the pore phase showed the best consistency with the segmentation area. Depending on the Zou-He Boundary and Regularized Boundary, the relative error of simulated average velocities was only 0.2602 percent.

Heterostructural PbO2/Co3O4 composite for anodic oxidation of phenol: An energy-efficient hybrid process

The PbO2/Co3O4 composite electrodes were synthesized using the composite co-deposition method, which involved the incorporation of Co3O4 nanoparticles into a PbO2 coating. These composite electrodes were employed as anodes for phenol electrooxidation in wastewater treatment. The results demonstrate that the PbO2/Co3O4 composite electrode exhibits a three-dimensional porous structure, leading to a significant increase in the electrochemically active surface area. Electrochemical measurements indicate that the composite electrode achieves a minimum oxygen evolution potential of 526.5 mV. Moreover, the electrode facilitates the indirect degradation of phenol, even at low voltage (0.45 V). The unique structure, improved conductivity, and enhanced surface area of the electrode contribute to its exceptional performance in phenol degradation. Additionally, this approach offers the potential for synergistic integration with other treatment methods, providing a sustainable and energy-efficient solution for removing persistent organic compounds from wastewater.

3D porous structure Fe3O4@SnO2/MXene composites with enhanced electrochemical performance for lithium ion battery anode

The low theoretical capacity of the commercial graphite electrodes used in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) necessitates the development of novel anode materials with higher rate performance, reversible specific capacities, long cycle lives, and low costs. In this work, three-dimensional porous structure Fe3O4 nanosphere with extremely thin SnO2 coatings are prepared by a method of getting twice the result with half the effort. And it was uniformly dispersed in an MXene flexible conductive matrix to fabricate a 3D porous heterogeneous Fe3O4@SnO2/MXene composite to act as an anode material for LIBs. The 3D porous heterojunction structure integrates the advantages of Fe3O4@SnO2 and MXene, achieving rapid electron and ion transport at the interface and the effective release of structural stress. The introduction of MXene markedly enhances the conductibility of the materials, limits the expansion of Fe3O4 during the Li+ insertion/removal process, and inhibits its aggregation. The Fe3O4@SnO2/MXene anode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance (1609 mAh g−1 over 200 cycles at 100 mA g−1 and 626.1 mAh g−1 over 900 cycles at 1000 mA g−1). These findings demonstrate that the Fe3O4@SnO2/MXene composite is a promising anode material for LIBs.

A novel nanosheets assembled porous fusiform Co2P2O7 for sensitive electrochemical detection of ultratrace As(III) ions

A facile and low-cost method was used to synthesize a novel nanosheets assembled porous fusiform Co2P2O7 for ultrasensitive electrochemical sensing detection of As(III) in water. The porous fusiform Co2P2O7 formed by small nanosheets exhibits a three-dimensional porous structure with a rough surface and good dispersion, facilitating a well-connected electron transfer path and providing numerous electroactive sites to bind with As(III). The proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited a high sensitivity of 91.04 µA µg/L cm−2 and a low detection limit of 0.087 µg/L towards As(III) in 0.1 M HAc-NaAc buffer (pH 5.0). Furthermore, it exhibited great potential for the electrochemical detection of As(III) in tap water.

ZIF-67 derived CoNi@carbon/RGO composites with abundant heterogeneous interfaces for electromagnetic wave absorption

The controllable structure design and composition regulation play a key role in the development of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing material. Herein, CoNi@carbon/RGO absorbing materials were successfully prepared by direct pyrolysis of ZIF-67/Ni(OH)2/GO precursor. The CoNi@carbon/RGO-15 sample achieves an RLmin value of −46.14 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 1.15 GHz (thickness 4.1 mm) at a low frequency with a filling amount of only 10 wt%. When the thickness is 1.5 mm, the RLmin reaches −41.09 dB and the EAB reaches 5.41 GHz, covering most of the Ku bands. After the pyrolysis, the carbon layer, Co and Ni nanoparticles, and RGO nanosheets form a three-dimensional porous structure, which builds up abundant heterogeneous interfaces and conductive networks. These factors can enhance impedance matching, dielectric, and magnetic loss. This indicates that CoNi@carbon/RGO is the potential lightweight EMW absorbing material with high performance.

A Large-Scale and Low-Cost Thermoacoustic Loudspeaker Based on Three-Dimensional Graphene Foam.

Graphene is a promising material for thermoacoustic sources due to its extremely low heat capacity per unit area and high thermal conductivity. However, current graphene thermoacoustic devices have limited device area and relatively high cost, which limit their applications of daily use. Here, we adopt a dip-coating method to fabricate a large-scale and cost-effective graphene sound source. This sound source has the three-dimensional (3D) porous structure that can increase the contact area between graphene and air, thus assisting heat to release into the air. In this method, polyurethane (PU) is used as a support, and graphene nanoplates are attached onto the PU skeleton so that a highly flexible graphene foam (GrF) device is obtained. At a measuring distance of 1 mm, it can emit sound at up to 70 dB under the normalized input power of 1 W. Considering its unique porous structure, we establish a thermoacoustic analysis model to simulate the acoustic performance of GrF. Furthermore, the obtained GrF can be made up to 44 in. (100 cm × 50 cm) in size, and it has good flexibility and processability, which broadens the application fields of GrF loudspeakers. It can be attached to the surfaces of objects with different shapes, making it suitable to be used as a large-area speaker in automobiles, houses, and other application scenarios, such as neck mounted speaker. In addition, it can also be widely used as a fully flexible in-ear earphone.

In Situ Growth 3D GDY-NCNTs Nanocomposites for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

New binary carbon composites (GDY-NCNTs and GDY-CNTs) with a three-dimensional porous structure, which are synthesized by an in situ growth method, are adopted in this article. The GDY-NCNTs composites exhibit excellent specific capacitance performance (679 F g-1, 2 mV s-1, 139% increase compared to GDY-CNTs) and good cycling stability (with a capacity retention rate of up to 116% after 10000 cycles). The three-dimensional porous structure not only promotes ion transfer and increases the effective specific surface area to improve its specific capacitance performance but also adapts to the volume expansion and contraction during the charging and discharging process to improve its cycling stability. The presence of nitrogen doping in the carbon nanotubes of GDY-NCNTs increases the surface defects of the composites, provides more electrochemical points, and improves the surface wettability of the composites, further improving the electrochemical performance of the composites.

Formulation and Characterization of Chitosan-Based Mixed-Matrix Scaffold for Tissue Engineering

The use of scaffolds, three-dimensional porous, biodegradable and biocompatible structures, that can be produced from natural polymers, synthetics, ceramics and metals is crucial in the tissue engineering field. Chitosan is a polysaccharide of natural origin, found in the exoskeleton of marine arthropods and in the cell wall of fungi, with enormous popularity in the production of three-dimensional materials for Tissue Engineering, in particular bone repair. This polymer has several advantages in the production of these structures in bone regeneration and repair: biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity and antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to prepare porous scaffolds, for bone repair of degenerative diseases in the spine with better performance and less secondary effects, based on chitosan and another biopolymer (sodium alginate) with the incorporation of calcium phosphates (hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate), for tissue engineering application. The obtained scaffolds were object of a detailed characterization, namely with regard to their porosity through the ethanol method, degradation, positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), mechanical properties, scanning electronic microscope (SEM), thermal stability through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), chemical composition through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results obtained showed that the different scaffolds presented pores able to support osteoid matrix growth. The crosslinking of scaffolds was also evaluated and resulted in pores with smaller dimensions and higher regularity in the chitosan-sodium alginate polymer without calcium phosphate scaffold. It was also possible to observe the effect of inorganics on mixed-matrix scaffolds, both morphologically and chemically. These scaffolds showed promising results in terms of mechanical and chemical properties, along with promising porosity for tissue regeneration applications.

Enhanced degradation of atrazine from soil with recyclable magnetic carbon-based bacterial pellets: Performance and mechanism

Herein, magnetic biochar coupled with Acinetobacter lwoffii DNS32 immobilized pellets (DMBC-P) were synthesized through sodium alginate embedding and fixation, which could fast and completely eliminate atrazine from contaminated farmland soil. Characterization results revealed that DMBC-P exhibited a significant abundance of three-dimensional network porous structures, thereby enhancing the stability and specific surface area of DMBC-P. The application of 0.5 % DMBC-P could completely remove 22 mg/kg atrazine from soil within 4 d under the condition of moisture content of 60 % and soil pH of 7.4. After 5 d of remediation, DMBC-P could be easily extracted from the soil by magnetic separation and still had 100 % removal efficiency for atrazine after 3 rounds of recycling. Moreover, DMBC-P effectively alleviated the oxidative damage of atrazine to soybean seedlings through significantly decreasing the activities of various plants antioxidant enzymes by 27 % to 79 %. Meanwhile, analysis of 16S rRNA revealed a significant increase in the relative abundance of functional microflora such as Acidobacteriota and Chloroflexi at the phylum level, which promoted the growth of soybean seedlings. Additionally, pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking were identified as the primary mechanisms responsible for atrazine adsorption onto DMBC-P. Subsequently, the degrading bacteria DNS32 immobilized on DMBC-P was employed to catalyze the decomposition of atrazine into non-toxic cyanuric acid based on LC-MS. Overall, this study provided a reasonable design of magnetic carbon-based bacterial pellet for atrazine-contaminated soil remediation, which could efficiently remove atrazine and be effectively recycled after remediation.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Characterization of Nitrate-Doped Polypyrrole/Ag Nanowire Nanorods as Supercapacitors.

Polypyrrole (PPy)-capped silver nanowire (Ag NW) nanomaterials (core-shell rod-shaped Ag NW@PPy) were synthesized using a one-port suspension polymerization technique. The thickness of the PPy layer on the 50 nm thickness/15 μm length Ag NW was effectively controlled to 10, 40, 50, and 60 nm. Thin films cast from one-dimensional conductive Ag NW@PPy formed a three-dimensional (3D) conductive porous network structure and provided excellent electrochemical performance. The 3D Ag NW@PPy network can significantly reduce the internal resistance of the electrode and maintain structural stability. As a result, a high specific capacitance of 625 F/g at a scan rate of 1 mV/s was obtained from the 3D porous Ag NW@PPy composite film. The cycling performance over a long period exceeding 10,000 cycles was also evaluated. We expect that our core-shell-structured Ag NW@PPy composites and their 3D porous structure network films can be applied as electrochemical materials for the design and manufacturing of supercapacitors and other energy storage devices.

A (3,12)-connected metal-organic framework based on hexanuclear zinc cluster for iodine capture

The adsorption of discharged radioactive iodine is considered an important method to address this environmental problem. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are expected to be potential materials for capturing iodine. In this work, a new zinc-based MOF, namely [Zn6(OH)6(DMTDC)3(TPB)]·0.5DMF (JOU-31), was successfully prepared under solvothermal condition (H2DMTDC = 3,4-dimethylthieno [2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, TPB = 1,3,5-tris(4-pyridyl)benzene, DMF = N,N-Dimethylformamide). Structural analyses revealed that JOU-31 was a three-dimensional porous structure based on hexanuclear zinc-oxide clusters. Topologically, the framework of JOU-31 can be simplified to a (3,12)-connected net with new Schläfli symbol of {43·630}{43}2. Due to its large specific surface area, abundant electron-rich N/S sites, and high stability, JOU-31 was applied to capture iodine. The saturated iodine adsorption capacity of JOU-31 in n-hexane solution was 822 mg g−1. In addition, the interaction mechanism between JOU-31 and the adsorbed iodine was further explored in detail. This work provides a valuable clue for the preparation of new MOFs for iodine adsorption.

Excellent sodium metal deposition enabled by three-dimensional porous structures with natrophilic Ni-Sn alloy

Na metal has long been an ideal potential anode material for sodium secondary batteries due to its own superiority; however, the Na dendrite problem during cycling makes it face a great obstacle in application. Here, we grow sodiophilic thin film materials with tin and nickel-tin components uniformly on three-dimensional nickel foam (3D-Ni) to obtain a 3D sodiophilic composite framework (namely 3D-NiSn) using a reproducible and mass-produced electrodeposition strategy. The combination of sodiophilic film (NiSn) and 3D porous framework could lower nucleation overpotential of Na and accelerate ions diffusion, hence inducing the uniform deposition and reversible stripping of sodium and inhibiting the growth of Na dendrites, which makes the 3D-NiSn/Na composite anode exhibit good performance compared to 3D-Ni/Na and Na-foil. The symmetrical cells with 3D-NiSn/Na can maintain up to 2500 h at 2 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2 with a low overpotential of around 30 mV during the whole cycling process. Additionally, the 3D-NiSn/NaǁNa3V2(PO4)3 full cells deliver good cycle stability with a high specific capacity of around 98.1 mAh g−1 at 3C for over 600 cycles. This work provides an idea for constructing low-cost and commercially available Na metal electrodes toward high-performance SIBs.

Turning Polysaccharides into Injectable and Rapid Self-Healing Antibacterial Hydrogels for Antibacterial Treatment and Bacterial-Infected Wound Healing.

Great efforts have been devoted to the development of novel and multifunctional wound dressing materials to meet the different needs of wound healing. Herein, we covalently grafted quaternary ammonium groups (QAGs) containing 12-carbon straight-chain alkanes to the dextran polymer skeleton. We then oxidized the resulting product into oxidized quaternized dextran (OQD). The obtained OQD polymer is rich in antibacterial QAGs and aldehyde groups. It can react with glycol chitosan (GC) via the Schiff-base reaction to form a multifunctional GC@OQD hydrogel with good self-healing behavior, hemostasis, injectability, inherent superior antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, and excellent promotion of healing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected wounds. The biosafe and nontoxic GC@OQD hydrogel with a three-dimensional porous network structure possesses an excellent swelling rate and water retention capacity. It can be used for hemostasis and treating irregular wounds. The designed GC@OQD hydrogel with inherent antibacterial activity possesses good antibacterial efficacy on both S. aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria), as well as MRSA bacteria, with antibacterial activity greater than 99%. It can be used for the treatment of wounds infected by MRSA and significantly promotes the healing of wounds. Thus, the multifunctional antibacterial GC@OQD hydrogel has the potential to be applied in clinical practice as a wound dressing.

AuNi bimetallic aerogel with ultra-high stability applied in smart and portable biosensing

Glucose detection is of significant importance in providing information to the human health management. However, conventional enzymatic glucose sensors suffer from a limited long-term stability due to the losing activity of the enzymes. In this work, the AuNi bimetallic aerogel with a well-defined nanowire network is synthesized and applied as the sensing nanomaterial in the non-enzymatic glucose detection. The three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure of the AuNi bimetallic aerogel ensures the high sensitivity of the sensor (40.34 μA mM−1 cm−2). Theoretical investigation unveiled the mechanism of the boosting electrocatalytic activity of the AuNi bimetallic aerogel toward glucose. A better adhesion between the sensing nanomaterial and the screen-printing electrodes (SPEs) is obtained after the introduction of Ni. On the basis of a wide linearity in the range of 0.1–5 mM, an excellent selectivity, an outstanding long-term stability (90 days) as well as the help of the signal processing circuit and an M5stack development board, the as-prepared glucose sensor successfully realizes remote monitoring of the glucose concentration. We speculate that this work is favorable to motivating the technological innovations of the non-enzymatic glucose sensors and intelligent sensing devices.

Direct detection of nitrite and nitrate in water on three-dimensional composite surface-enhanced raman scattering substrate

To solve the problem of the low sensitivity of the direct detection of nitrite and nitrate in water using Raman spectroscopy, we propose a three-dimensional composite surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate. In addition, this cysteamine/gold/cysteamine composite structure is self-assembled onto anodic aluminum oxide and has a three-dimensional porous structure. Experimental results determined that the substrate’s detection limits for nitrite and nitrate are 0.1 mg l−1 and 1 mg l−1, respectively. Moreover, these meet environmental groundwater quality class II (nitrite, ≤0.1 mg l−1) and class I (nitrate, ≤1 mg l−1), respectively. The relative standard deviations calculated for nitrite and nitrate were 6.19% and 4.93%, respectively. Furthermore, the SERS substrate achieved equivalent detection limits for mixed nitrite and nitrate solution compared to separate nitrite and nitrate solutions, albeit with a weaker Raman signal. Therefore, this SERS substrate is capable of the sensitive and rapid determination of nitrite and nitrate at low concentrations without any treatment.

A fireproof insulation block with three-dimensional pore structure fabricated using alkali activated steel slag

In an effort to fully harness the potential of steel slag, it has been employed in the production of fire-resistant insulation blocks. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to examine the influence of sodium silicate modulus, water addition, hydrogen peroxide addition, and curing temperature on various properties such as porosity, apparent density, thermal conductivity, and compressive strength of the blocks. The results reveal that the prepared fireproof insulation block possesses a porosity of 89.6%, an apparent density of 0.334 g/cm3, a thermal conductivity of 0.177 W/(m∙K), and a compressive strength of 0.12 MPa, achieved with preparation parameters including a sodium silicate modulus of 1.5, a water content of 20%, a foaming agent addition of 4%, and a curing temperature of 50 °C. The relationship between the thermal conductivity and porosity can be accurately predicted using the NEMT model. Furthermore, to further decrease the thermal conductivity of the material, it is possible to reduce both the size and connectivity of the pores present within it. This research offers insights and avenues for the expanded utilization of steel slag in the development of building materials.

The electrocatalytic activity of pomelo peel-derived nitrogen-doped carbon material for oxygen reduction reaction

Exploring the non-precious metal catalysts of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) becomes the key to promote the industrialization of new energy devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries because of the sluggish kinetics of ORR. Three-dimensional N-doped carbon (NC-900) material was obtained using the high-temperature pyrolysis of pomelo peel waste. The prepared NC-900 catalyst possesses an ultra-high specific surface area of 1631.3 m2·g−1, high content of 57.7 ± 0.9% pyrrolic-N, and three-dimensional porous structure. As the ORR catalyst, NC-900 has a onset potential of 0.992 V and half-wave potential of 0.859 V, comparable to 0.988 and 0.872 V of Pt/C. The typical 4-electron pathway of ORR process is occupied by the surface of NC-900. The ORR catalytic activity of NC-900 was almost unaffected by methanol. After 8 h of continuous operation, the reduction current on the surface of NC-900 was decreased only 2.7% of the initial current. Based on these outstanding ORR performances, the pomelo peel-derived NC-900 can serve as a strong competitor for the substitute of Pt/C to promote the potential industrialization of new energy devices.
